SPRING TURN ON'S

When spring arrives and freezing temperatures cease, it's time to turn on irrigation systems and start watering again. But before you do so make sure you give us a call so we can properly reactivate your system. Spring turn-ons involve our technician turning on your system, running through each zone to make sure all heads are working/functioning properly, and setting your controller to the schedule you desire for watering.

WINTERIZATIONS

When the temperatures begin to drop for the year and the weather forecast shows freezing temperatures, its time to act now! Winterizing your irrigation system is the removal of water from the pipes, valves and heads. It is crucial to have your winterization done before the first recorded freeze of the year to protect your entire system from potentially serious damage this winter. Our winterizations involve our technician hooking a compressor to your system to completely empty the system of any water, and removal of the backflow preventer for indoor winter storage. This will prevent the backflow from freezing and prevents any damage to the system.

TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHILE WAITING FOR YOUR WINTERIZATION:

  • Shut the water off to the system if the system is not being used – the main shut off can be located in different areas like a crawl space, basement, underground, etc . If you do not know where your main shut off is this would be a great question for you to ask our technicians when they are on site.
  • If you have shut the main water supply to the irrigation system off it is IMPORTANT to make sure you have also powered down your control panel.

BACKFLOW PRECAUTIONS:

Your backflow preventer is normally located around the foundation of your home, in a crawl space, or in some cases can be out in the middle of the yard, or near the meter at the street.

  • When you know there is a freeze one precaution you can take to try and save your backflow preventer is to wrap the device with a towel or heavy blanket, then wrap everything with a plastic bag that you tape or secure in place. – the back flow is found in your yard or a crawlspace and is a device sticking out of the ground with white pvc pipe attached to it.
  • You can also remove your backflow if you feel comfortable taking this piece off. You may store this inside but please keep in mind for the winterization process we will need this valve.

DO NOT TURN THE VALVES ON THE BACK FLOW OFF. WITH DOING SO YOU HAVE NOW TRAPPED WATER IN THE BACKFLOW AND IF A FREEZE DOES ACCRUE THAT STANDING WATER WILL FREEZE AND COULD POTENTIALLY DAMAGE THE MOST IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE PARTS OF YOUR IRRIGATION SYSTEM.

With doing these things listed above we Creative Rain Irrigation can NOT guarantee your system from freezing

Backflow Preventers : There are two different types of backflow's, what backflow is used is not by choice but by code. Many factors come into play on the reasons of why the certain backflow is placed at your home.

Pictures for example - yours may look slightly different.

WE ALSO OFFER BACKFLOW TESTING

Backflow testing is required by Chesterfield and Hanover County: The backflow preventer stops water from flowing back into the supply line. This ensures that your sprinklers are a one-way system, and keeps the drinking water of your home safe. The backflow and connections will break or wear out, just like the parts of a car. By having your Backflow Prevention Assembly tested annually, you will help to ensure that the drinking water supplied to your home remains safe each and every year.
